The inspiration for this project was a video I saw with 3D modeled versions of the animated band, Gorillaz.  I wanted the look of this to be what I would imagine a cartoon version of the band to look like. The challenge when modeling something like this, is creating the geometry so that it captures light and shadow in a way reminicent of lines in hand-drawn 2D animation.  The additional challenge of this project specifically, was recreating all the band members’ tattoos in Adobe Photoshop, and applying them as texture maps on the 3D models in Maya. While the band members are obvious caricatures, the instruments are allRead More →

I decided to create this character model mainly for the challenge.  Having done a few caricatures prior to this one, I think it’s most difficult to do one of yourself.  I ended up really happy with it, and hope to eventually use the model in a series of animated blog posts.  The last image I’ve included is a different model depicting what it might look like if they made an “action” figure of me. All modeling was done in Maya, with textures created in Adobe Photoshop.  The t-shirt is based off one I actually own, created by a great t-shirt designer, Johnny Cupcakes. This was a character model I created in Maya for an animation project I worked on with Trace Animation for ACAC Fitness Centers.  He was rigged for full body animation and lip sync for an animation project where Ace gave a tour of a new facility.  The second image in the series is the character sheet I worked from which was provided by ACAC.
